Teaching yourself piano can soon feel like a chore. Sometimes it can be boring, especially if you’re feeling like you’re just playing the same scales over and over again – which you probably are, but there’s a way to liven it up and make learning piano more fun and engaging.
Supplement your learning with piano apps!
There are hundreds of apps for iOS and Android that focus on teaching users how to play piano. Most feature a virtual keyboard of sorts, which can be really helpful if you really want to learn piano but don’t have your own instrument yet. There are also plenty of games you can play to hone your skills in identifying piano notes and chords, reading music and training your ear. There are even metronome apps to aid you in keeping time as you play.
Today we’ll be taking a look at some of the best feature-filled apps you can download and install on your device. Normally we’ll advise to keep your phone or tablet away during lessons if it’s distracting you, but if you’re using your phone to learn piano, then by all means keep it around!
So which apps do we recommend for piano beginners? Here are our top 3 choices.
With a 4.4 star rating on Google Play and a 4.2 rating on the Apple App Store, Perfect Piano is proven to be one of the best free piano learning apps out there. We love the built-in metronome and sound effects that include a soprano saxophone, a steel string guitar, a music box and our favorite, a grand piano. Beginners learn to play thousands of popular songs, and you can adjust the speed and difficulty level to your liking. What’s more, you can play the piano and chat with other users around the world and even join weekly challenges!
Simply Piano boasts a 4.7 rating on the App Store and 4.4 stars on Google Play. The app is a great tool to help you in learning piano because it recognizes what you are playing and gives you instant feedback. The app offers two courses for free (one course on Android). If you like them and would like to receive full access to all of the piano courses (equal to two years’ worth of piano learning), you can subscribe for a fee.
