Asthma is a respiratory condition that can be a reaction to certain triggers which narrow the airways. The most common symptoms are difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and coughing and wheezing, particularly at night. Asthma has become more and more common in Australia over the last few years; current statistics indicate that one in ten adults has asthma. There is currently no cure for asthma but it can be managed with these tips.
Many asthmatics are allergic to pollens, moulds and grasses and it is therefore important to build up the immune system. Wheat, yeast and dairy products can also be common triggers for shortness of breath. You can ask your doctor or naturopath for a food allergy test to see if there are particular foods which aggravate symptoms.
Treatment & prevention program
Many sufferers of asthma are aware of major triggers; exercise, cigarette smoke, air-conditioning, food allergens, dust mites, pollens and seasonal changes are external factors that asthmatics can control in their daily living.
Simple strategies such as replacing carpets and curtains with floor boards and blinds in your house can be of great benefit. Check the trees and plants in your garden to see if any have high airborne pollens (privet trees are often an aggravation). Use eucalyptus oil burners in your home to clear the air and always use allergy-free cleaning fluids.
Mucus-forming foods such as dairy products (including cream and ice cream), white pasta, white breads, cakes and chocolate must be cut down by 70 percent. Fresh citrus fruit daily is essential as are three or four different kinds of vegetables.
Continue on the prescribed medicine from your doctor and add the following supplements.
- A teaspoon of liquid echinacea twice a day or three to four tablets daily. Taken during seasonal changes and winter, this helps to prevent the onset of upper respiratory problems.
- Magnesium in powder form: take one teaspoon, twice a day. If you can only obtain tablets then take one 500 mg tablet twice a day. Magnesium assists in relaxing the muscles.
- Vitamin C and bioflavonoids in tablet or powder form: 500 mg of each, twice a day.
- A herbal tonic made from equal parts of echinacea, euphrasia, liquorice, thyme, astragalus and peppermint: one teaspoon two or three times a day.
