May sometimes be overlooked
When a child is being bullied at school it is very noticeable and very obvious. Though the parents are sometimes unfortunately oblivious to the situation it is still quite apparent that a child or young adult is going through trauma at school. The child may not have any friends that could report the matter to teachers or principals at school therefore again, it can be overlooked by the school administration. In a large family where there are a lot of siblings involved it is easier for such occurrences to happen unnoticed. Teachers and principals must be ever careful and constantly on the lookout for such children going through these issues. They should take matters for granted that a child prefers to remain alone instead of having friends. The should not assume that a child likes to stay behind to chat with teachers because they simply like the teacher, but they should dig deeper into the matter. When they notice that a child is constantly alone they should inquire as to whether the child or young adult has friends or not. When a child or young adult is comfortable enough to approach them, they should have enough concern for the child to speak about pressing issues. In the event that an issue is determined they must contact the parents immediately to inform them of the difficulty that the child is going through.
Cyber bullying is so discreet
Unlike physical, emotional, or intellectual bullying, cyber bullying is usually done online where a child or young adult is shamed online for whatever reason. At times an embarrassing situation is posted online or an embarrassing image that the person would not have wanted to be shared is posed on the internet. This will cause great embarrassment to anyone, how much more a young adult that is struggling already in school and is not really able to identify him or herself with anyone. The purpose of cyber bullying is to embarrass, threaten, ridicule, or harass an individual. There is absolutely nothing constructive or productive about it. It is a form of bullying that is very discreet and goes by unnoticed to most school officials; not that they do not care but they are sometimes not aware of the dangers caused or how significant the situation really is. When a young adult is physically bullied at school to the extent that their pair of blue blocker glasses are taken off from their face and thrown to the ground it is obvious that they are being victimized and the perpetrator will duly be punished for their behaviour.
However, when it is done online through a social media platform it is easier for the perpetrator to get away with their crime without any repercussions as the crime would not have been committed on the school grounds and the information can easily be deleted from the internet.
What needs to be done?
Proper measures need to be put into place in order to protect the victims out there. Teachers, principals, secretaries working within the school boards need to receive proper training about cyber bullying in order to be able to notice when such foul activities are going on around them. Parents and family members must also have an awareness of such crimes that occur between students at school.
