Bohemianism has always been the practice of an unconventional lifestyle. In modern usage, term bohemian or boho applies to people who live artistic and free-spirited lives and have a unique style. One of the most fun facts about this particular style is the fact it doesn’t really care what is ‘in’ right now and it focuses mainly on the natural and flowy fabrics and overall clothing that connects a person with nature. In other words, if you really think about it, there actually are no strict rules what is bohemian and what is not.
Also, summer, that is the most favorite bohemian season, will come sooner than you think. So, if you are considering trying this style out, now is the perfect time to start preparing your new boho wardrobe.
Maxi skirt is ESSENTIAL when it comes to bohemian style. Of course, it has to have a bold, eye-catching (geometrical, floral, mandala etc.) print. These skirts are chic and feminine but, at the same time, really light, which makes them ideal for summer and hot weather. Wear your maxi skirt with a simple tank top or a lace shirt for that signature minimalistic boho look.
You can aim towards either modern or full boho look, but regardless of that, you simply need a peasant top. These tops, especially ones with embroidered details such as colorful flowers, kind of remind me of every soap opera I have ever watched to be honest. But jokes aside, these can be worn with pretty much anything you can think of: from maxi skirts, over shorts and flared jeans, all the way to maxi dresses.
When you think of casual bohemian style, tunics are probably the first thing that comes to mind. They are also a great solution for those who think of wrinkled cotton and embroidery as something too loud for their taste. Tunics with simple or natural prints are always a way to go. They look great with a pair of jeans and platform sandals or with leggings and knee boots. Jewelry included.
Head-wraps and hairbands
If wearing a flower crown may seem a little bit too cliché for you, there is always another solution. Opt for those thin hippie headbands and wear them back two inches past your hairline – kind of like a halo. Alternatively, go for turbands if you are feeling brave enough – they look best with wavy or curly hair.
If you’re not into hairbands, head-wraps, turbands or flower crowns, you can always go with a cool sun hat instead. The key is in going as natural as possible by opting for those woven straw ones to really embrace the organic vibe. And if you are going for a modern boho, then opt for a fedora.
There are just so many variations. You can opt for a strappy maxi dress, a long-sleeved one, a short sleeved-one, or even a long kaftan with nature-inspired prints. Wear them with wedge sandals, chunky jewelry and maybe even a denim vest if you want a more casual look.
Probably the perfect summer footwear. They are light, casual and ‘summery’ but, at the same time, look really fashionable and polished. Knee-high gladiators are just perfect for outdoor festivals and concerts, and high heel ones look fabulous with skirts, dresses or skinny jeans. Look for styles that aren’t hard to slip on and off, and if you are shorter, opt for those that stop right before the ankle.
There’s a simple rule when it comes to boho jewelry – the more unique it is, the better. You can look for it at flea markets, incense stores or even make it yourself. The key is to make it out of natural elements such as coral, wood, turquoise, suede or feathers. You can wear anything, and you can wear it all at once: dangly earrings, statement necklaces, metal and wood bangles, big rings – whatever you can think of, note that you have zero limits.
Even though bohemian is all about layering, since it is summer, it just isn’t wise to pile lots of layers of chunky clothing on you. This is when light cardigans come to the scene. They are just fabulous because they aren’t too warm, but can still make you comfortable once the sun sets and it temperatures fall a little bit. Opt for flowy ones that will add movement and drama to your look.
Finally, what does the girl need to put an outfit together? A cute purse. Bohemian is all about cross-body bags that are great for festivals and concerts because your hands are free, floppy purses and canvas messenger bags that maximize that earthy vibe.
So? Feeling like a gypsy already? Will you give this look a try? Let me know.
