makes 6 dozen 1 inch squares
1 pound caramels, unwrapped
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 box Swiss chocolate cake mix
3/4 cup, 1 1/2 sticks, butter melted
1 cup chopped nuts of your choice
1 package, 12 oz, semisweet chocolate chips
preheat the oven to 350 degrees. grease and flour a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
melt the caramels together with 1/3 cup of evaporated milk in the top of a double boiler. set aside to cool… or you can microwave them, watching closely and stirring until melted and combined.
combine the cake mix with the remainig 1/3 cup of evaporated milk, butter and nuts.
the dough will be stiff. press half of the dough into the prepared pan. bake 6 minutes.
spread the chocolate chips over the dough and top with the caramel mixture. sprinkle the remaining dough over the top. bake the brownies and additional 15 to 18 minutes or until golden. cool and cut into squares.
