While America has been celebrating Halloween in for decades, it is a recent occurrence that the holiday has become more than just children trick or treating around the houses. This guide looks at the events that are scattered around the city, some are great for the whole family while others are purely for adults but, either way, you are guaranteed to have a fun-filled night.
Dark Arts at Warner Bros Studio: The Making of Harry Potter
The Harry Potter Studios are known for their themed events throughout the year and, naturally, they have planned something special for Halloween. Situated in Watford which is just a bus ride away from the London Shaftesbury hotels, the studio is exploring the darker side of the wizarding world by allowing you to duel a Death Eater and to take part in the Battle of Hogwarts. There is a big focus on the design and intricate detailing on the Death Eaters and the studio delves into the props used by Voldemort and his followers. To top off this experience, the Great Hall will be sumptuously decorated with apples, sweets, working cauldrons and, of course, over 100 floating pumpkins to really bring the Halloween vibe to life.
Highgate to Hampstead Haunted Halloween Pub Tour
This one is strictly for adults only as, not only does it involve gruesome historical tales and immersive theatre, but it also comes with a lot of pubs in between. The tour begins at Highgate, not far from the Hyde Park International Hotel, where you will be escorted around the cemetery and be told of the tales surrounding grave robbing and the Highgate vampire from the 19th century. From here you will stop at four different pubs, one of which used to allow autopsies, and another was part of ancient drinking society that Lord Byron was a member of. It is a night that will require a drink or two in order to give you a bit of courage for what is in store.
Fortnum & Mason Pumpkin Carving Classes
Pumpkin carving is a firm favourite with the whole family and where better to do it than the prestigious Fortnum & Mason. There are classes for both adults and children where your creativity and imagination are rewarded with yummy treats; there is also a prize for the best pumpkin at the end of each class. The classes itself are taught by professional artists who will give you the tips and tricks needed for you to produce your own pumpkin masterpiece.
Take to the Ice this Halloween
The ice rink isn’t for the Christmas period alone and this year, the Skylight Rooftop shows that Halloween is the perfect time to take to the ice. There is a requirement to dress up, after all it isn’t a Halloween party without fancy dress, and there is plenty of food and alcohol to keep you warm in the cold October nights. There is a prize for the best fancy dress, as well as several ice-skating performances specifically designed to scare. It is a great night out if you’re looking for something a little bit different.
