Once you have decided to buy a garage door opener such as roller door openers or maybe sliding gate motors, you have to first educate yourself about the different kinds of door openers and their pros and cons.
Types of garage door openers
Well, there are four common types of garage door openers meant for residential use and these are categorized based on the mechanism that moves the garage door: screw, chain, belt or torsion spring. What matters most when deciding on the type of garage door opener for your garage is the price, maintenance and the noise level. The garage door opener that best suits your requirements will be a result of the compromise made between those three aspects.
Chain driven garage door openers – These cost the least and are the most common type of electric garage door opener. Despite being the most cost effective option of a door opener, these models are in fact the noisiest and of course, need a lot of maintenance. With a number of moving parts, regular maintenance is crucial to minimize the premature wear of the internal parts as well as the chain.
Screw-driven garage door openers – These models are generally moderately priced and are less noisy than the chain driven models. These openers have a worm screw that is held within their rail. Under the worm screw, a grooved carriage keeps riding. When you activate the door opener, the worm screw turns as well as moves the carriage, eventually lifting the garage door. As these openers have the least amount of moving parts, not much of maintenance is required. Besides, these are the fastest and the strongest type of garage door openers.
Belt-driven garage door openers – These door openers are quite expensive. They don’t produce any noise. Belt-driven openers operate in a similar fashion as the chain driven types; however, a quieter rubber belt replaces the loud chain. Also, these openers have a lot of moving parts that need regular maintenance. The rubber belt provided is durable and majority of manufacturers provide a long warranty period on the power head and the rubber belt.
Torsion-spring garage door openers – These are the most expensive door openers. Their unique design offers great benefits to users. However, because of their limited availability and some extent of unpredictability, these models are not very common. They operate with less noise. Maintenance of these cheap garage door openers is also comparatively higher. In addition, if the power head does not move in alignment, there are chances for the garage door to get jammed.
