As technological advancements take place, it always brings to the forefront discussions about the shelf life of the older technology. Are they relevant or are they obsolete? In most cases, the fear that something will become completely outdated because a newer technology has been put into place is unfounded.
Take for instance, microwaves. They may have made cooking faster, but gas stoves are just as alive and kicking today as they were yesterday. And, television may have made audio-visual content more accessible, but radio continues be a popular medium nonetheless.
Offset printing faced similar uncertainty when digital printing became mainstream. Being a more convenient and cost-effective printing solution, the latter was adopted rapidly by small companies and big corporations alike. Digital printers (or Multifunction Printers) were easy to set up and you could print as many or as few copies as you wanted.
Offset printers, on the other hand, were cumbersome devices that could only print large, predetermined runs. However, they did deliver better quality print jobs than their digital counterparts and were the perfect option for publishing houses.
Today, printing technology is continuously developing and evolving. Digital printers are churning out higher quality prints while offset printers are becoming more affordable. It is no longer a matter of choosing between one or the other. Based on changing application requirements, printing suppliers are using both to their advantage. Digital printers are reserved for projects with short runs and quick turnaround times whereas offset printers take care of anything involving longer runs.
The thing is, end-use demands and preferences are extremely varied. Those providing printing services like Ricoh must have both digital as well as offset solutions. Not only will this improve their efficiency significantly, it will also allow them to offer the most appropriate solution to their clients. And in that we see, how both technology – old and new – are working together side by side to offer impeccable solutions to customers.
