Dill Weed: Usage and Storage
There are quite a few reasons why people are told to be mindful when it comes to washing dill weed. It has the ability to shrink very quickly and this why you should not over-wash it. If the idea is to put away the plants for storage, then it’s you do not wash it until it’s ready to be used.
If you happen to purchase natural dill, then that’s a better reason to avoid washing it. Natural dill is usually pesticide-free and that gives you one less thing to worry about. The truth of the matter is that consuming a very small amount of soil can have a positive effect on the stomach if you’re an individual who prefers not to over-wash your vegetables. This is no reason to believe that you should go ahead and eat anything that might be on the leaves. If you see a bug or lots of soil, then by all means wash it off. However, steps must be taken to see that it is dried properly before storing.
If you are fortunate enough to have a bug-free crop, there is not much else to do but place it in a sealed plastic bag and leave it in the refrigerator. Keeping under this consistent temperature will minimize the chances of unwanted substances filtering through the plastic. If there is a question of preference, you can substitute the plastic bag with a glass container that can be sealed shut.
Dill can remain refrigerated for as long as 10 days without losing its freshness. Just ensure that the temperature doesn’t fall below 4℃.
Another useful method that is used to store dill is the act of freezing this will help to extend the freshness. After gently washing and the drying the leaves, use a knife to cut into small pieces according to how much you might need.
