Australia is a multicultural country which has been receptive of immigrants. Over the past years, many immigrants have found their home here. Today, we are going to tell you a story about an Italian immigrant family which migrated from Abruzzo (a region in Italy) to Australia in the 1950s.
The Mitolo Family
The Mitolo family brought their culture with them and stayed true to their region where life is enjoyed to the fullest with friends and family. They started working in the potato business and Frank Mitolo crafted wines as a pastime for his family and friends. Little did he know that what started on a small scale would expand in the coming years. In 1999, a five-hour discussion with Ben Glaetzer laid the foundation of Mitolo wines. Both of them joined hands and dreamt of crafting wines which would reflect the ultimate expression of McLaren’s Vale. A six-word business plan was jotted on a napkin: purity, elegance, integrity, individuality, quality and power. Their motto is “forte a gentile” which in English translates to strong and gentle.
In 2000, the first Mitolo wine was released—the 2000 G.A.M Shiraz, named after Frank’s children Gemma, Alex and Marco. This was the beginning of an amazing journey for the brand.
Coming from a family of winemakers, Ben has worked in many reputed wine regions around the world and is a business partner too. At the age of 24, he won the title of Qantas Young Winemaker of the Year.
Besides this award, he has won other awards in his winemaking career, receiving outstanding reviews from wine critics.
