Tour its beautiful alleys and lanes:
The city is well planned and has numerous squares and plazas that are linked to a warren of streets and alleys perfect to explore on foot. The most striking feature of the buildings is they are colourful and vibrant. Even those who get lost in the endless maze of alleys need not panic. All they need to do is head downhill and they will arrive in the centre of the city. Guanajuato is a city meant to be explored on foot.
Try the local food:
If you are a foodie there is plenty of delightful street food to savour while touring the markets and touring around the city. Enjoy the best of Mexican tamales, sopes and gorditas while walking around and sampling the delicacies of different vendors. After you have had your fill of food wash it down with delicious Mexican coffee or enjoy a refreshing ice cream.
Stroll around Diego Rivera’s Home:
One of the most famous Mexican artists of his time Diego Rivera (spouse of the legendary Frida Kahlo) lived in Guanajuato. His former residence is now a popular museum-cum-art gallery, open for visitors to explore. See the house where Diego and his equally famous life painted, socialised and threw lavish parties for friends. Some of the best art creations of Rivera are on display along with several other Mexican artists as well.
Get aboard the funicular:
A great way to enjoy a beautiful sight of the city is to ride its funicular transport (tram car hoisted by a cable) that takes people up the steep mountainside. It offers breathtaking views while on the way up. After reaching the summit there is a spectacular sight that unfolds over the entire city. There also is the statue of a local hero Pipila to admire at the top.
Visit the many cathedrals and churches:
Guanajuato is home to numerous cathedrals and churches in and around the centre of the city. One of the most prominent is the Basilica de Guanajuato that occupies a commanding presence in the principal plaza.
