However, the entire fundamental reasons behind the belief that there are golden rules which are applicable to all metal types and alloys are still having general validity. It is because technology is the thing that makes castings more durable, stronger, robust and high performing.
- Using good quality molten metal– A melt used for ferrous casting process must be properly prepared and treated under best practices. The foundry experts should aim for providing a melt at accurate temperature, chemistry, and with lesser contaminants and dissolved air.
- The presence of air bubbles and impurities will make casting porous and poor in quality. It is compulsory to have good quality melt for better solidification of ferrous casting.
- Avoid arrest of the liquid front– The molten metal front process should not carry out at the slower speed and also, it should not stop at any point during the process. The arrest of the liquid front leads to oxide laps, or if delayed, even cold laps.
- Check bubble damage and treat it before it gets too late – Ensure that no bubbles should be present in the melt flow. If any bubble exists or seen in the flow, it should not be allowed to enter the mold cavity. This can damage the ferrous casting and you can later have severe defects in the product.

- Avoid convection damage – The convection damage issues can be easily avoided by thin or thick section castings. Thin section castings freeze fast before convection constructs. In thick section castings, convection assists reallocate hot metal into the risers on the surface of the casting, since there is a lot of time before freezing begins.
- Layout segregation distribution – Changing section will facilitate a change in the distribution of alloying elements present in the melt used in the ferrous castings manufacturing. This can be a severe trouble if properties get affected.
- Manage Residual Stress: Avoid unidentified or random residual stress by threatening to quench of low ductility & light alloy castings into the water of high-temperature resolution treatment.
