Pearl is considered to be one of the classic gemstone found on earth. These are famous for their exquisite glow that they produce. These are highly obtained by two different processes one is the natural harvesting, and the other one is artificial harvesting. It is not necessary to know about how pearls are being harvested, but it is kind of interesting to know about the complete process. Pearls are generally categorized into two naturally occurringpearls and cultured pearls. Nowadays cultured pearls are more in use as natural pearls are hard to find. So we are going to about learn about the cultured harvesting pearls.
- The Pearl harvesting
Pearls come from oysters. Cultured pearls are born when oysters are being kept and maintained under ideal conditions by oyster farmers. A shell bead nucleus is being injected into the oyster which irritates the oyster to produce the layers of nacre. The outer layer is composed of some organic substances and calcium carbonate. After a certain period of time, the oysters are being sent to the harvesters, who carefully open the oysters. Nowadays special equipment is being used to open the oysters so that again a shell bead nucleus could be injected into the oyster. A single oyster can be used multiple times for harvesting.
- The Practice
The process requires a high level of practice and patience as well as careful touch. It is a very delicate practice, and there are professionals who do it. It takes a lot of effort to take out the pearl nicely and smoothly without harming the oyster, so it can be used again.
- The Polishing of Pearls
After all the pearls are harvested, they are being cleaned and polished. Each pearl is cleaned up one by one so that the cleaning would be perfect so as there would be no debris and it can further go for polishing. It is being polished by pearl powder to add more lusters to its natural luster to make it look bright and shiny.
