PSAP or personal sound amplifying products are useful devices that can be used as alternative to hearing aids. PSAP devices work well when hearing aids don’t. Manufacturers having pocket size hearing aid devices also stock PSAP devices for needy ones.
PSAPs can be initial devices that people with mild hearing loss can use. Hearing aids are ideal for people with impaired hearing, while PSAPs are designed for those who are unable to hear clearly.
Recently, organizations representing hearing aid manufacturers and audiologists have complained to the agency about some PSAP manufacturers who are marketing the devices as low-cost off-the-shelf hearing aids.
The bad part is that there is no reliable way has been found yet to assess PSAPs and their work ability. There is a lot of variability in the range and if one product suits a person may not suit another one.
Some PSAPs available in the market-
- Pocket talkers
Each is a portable unit. The size of pocket talkers is exacts the size of a pack of cards. The device is attached with a microphone that transmits sound signals to the person wearing earbuds or earphones. These types of devices are being sold for generally $100 to $150.
Pocket talkers are very helpful for seniors with difficulty in hearing in a one-on-one situation. This is a short term basis solution to the problem. These devices are provided by the organizations to patients in its short-stay rehabilitation program to hear prescriptions of doctors, nurses, therapists, and dietitians.
Almost every nursing home and assisted living facility have these devices available on the floor for visitors to help them communicate with residents. These devices are also great option for homebound older adults who cannot manipulate hearing aids.
- Ear ‘readers’
Browse online and you will find a range of PSAPs under $20 and $40 labeled as “readers for your ears.” Hearing loss is different from vision loss. You just cannot put on a device and restore your hearing completely. Once the hearing quality is damaged, you won’t be able to hear clearly.
People who don’t wish to spend several thousand dollars on hearing aids, these products can act as a reliable option for them. Still the quality of these products varies significantly. Whatever you buy, be it a pocket size hearing aid or an ear reader, you must check the warrant and customer support provided by the dealer.
