These queries are common, and yes, what I do often fills the shoes of a silent monk. In most of the 60 years I’ve been the owner of this mailbox and parish chapel, I’ve been asked at least once about my set-up. Whenever I’ve been asked, I’ve come up with more than 1,000 possible options.

The best meditation techniques lead you to a quiet place, in this case your living room or car, and for up to 20 minutes, you come to a conscious place to rest your mind, your body, and your soul. You hear your breath, think about something of value, and dwell in the state of being still.
What kind of cushion and lighting and role have you set? Are you to choose the “confrontational” one that makes you open your heart and looks like a bunk that was sold for a bargain basement price or the “refreshing” recliner (for the casual diner) where you can hear birds chirping on a wiry nylon tree branch while you luxuriate in a world of calm.

Whether you choose the marathon-runner’s retreat or the blank-screen-sleeping-in calm, many people find that their heart and soul start to feel quieter. They sense a joy in being at peace with themselves and letting go of tension. They realize that in life we must do, and sometimes have to do, things that are unpleasant.
The Zen-Loving Kind
Some people find that a daily meditation prayer is simply a way to quiet themselves so they can think more thoughtfully or stop their spirits from grinding away on mundane tasks.
I’ve learned to find the things I appreciate most in my day by listening for how quiet it feels. And sometimes in order to try to jump into action or let go of tension, I’ll take a meditation prayer every morning, too.

One woman started walking her dog for a few hours each afternoon and found that she could concentrate better at work without being exhausted. In some situations, focusing on a few instructions can be easier than maintaining a full attention.

Zen masters have practiced since the 1930s, when during a quiet moment they could ponder whatever they wished. They practiced deep meditation to think deep thoughts as they experienced nature.
Some of the best days of my life have been spent in deep Zen practice. When you spend a lifetime sitting down, other creatures find quieting when it comes around.
By focusing in a simple manner—a flat stance, slight eye contact, and accepting your surroundings as they are—you can be mindful of other people—a great benefit when trying to learn to become one of them.
