Summer may be ending, but that doesn’t mean we have to spend less time outside. Fall brings with it milder temperatures, cool breezes and beauty in nature – making it a favourite season for many. It is also the season dedicated to preparing for the colder, wetter and darker winter ahead. Make sure you will be able to enjoy your alfresco during the colder seasons by preparing it before the cold hits. Here are some handy tips for getting your alfresco ready for autumn.
Clean it and store it
Regular use and exposure to the sun’s harsh rays can take its toll on your outdoor furniture. Wipe down all the tables and chairs to get rid of dirt, debris and grime, and restore dry wooden furniture by applying a layer of oil or wax to the surface. Clean all your outdoor cushions properly with soap and water and place it outside to dry thoroughly. Cover any furniture or textiles that you won’t be using during winter (such as a hammock, or pool furniture) with plastic sheets and store it until next summer.
Restore the alfresco floor
After a hot summer, most wooden decks and patio floors will look slightly warn, dirty and faded. Revive your floors with a good rinse to get rid of the dirt build up, remove stains from the wood, and finish it off with a wood finish that will seal it and protect it from further UV damage and bugs.
If you plan on spending time outside during the colder seasons, now is the time to warm up your alfresco and make it as cosy as possible. If you have a fireplace or fire pit, clean it up and make sure it is safe and ready to use when you need to. Add an outdoor heater to your alfresco for extra heat on cool nights, and use a beautiful warm rug, blankets and pillows to keep your guests comfortable at all times. Opt for textiles in warm hues such as reds, orange, and yellow to instantly create a welcoming and warm atmosphere.
Cover it up
You don’t have to stop using and enjoying your alfresco just because it’s cold outside. To make your alfresco comfortable during any season consider adding a roof to the space. Retractable roof systems are ideal as you can open them up or close them fully when required and they can be used in conjunction with products such as outdoor blinds and aluminium shutters to provide full protection from the elements while outdoors. These shading products also protects your outdoor furniture and patio floor from harmful exposure to UV rays, rain and wind, and there will be no need to restore or store these items during any season.
