You’ve probably seen a lot of your friends and coworkers starting gym because of its summers and well, you need to shed a lot of winter weight to look good. When you realize this fact, you curse yourself on not staying on your new year’s resolution to join a gym or lose weight before the summers get to you. Then, in that moment of truth, you decide that okay, you do need to join a gym.
A lot of people don’t join the gym because it means commitment and money sorting and plenty of other factors that come with it. The best way to decide which gym you need to choose is to weigh your options and see if they fit in the following must-haves of a gym.
Listing your essentials
See what you need to do. Do you want to join a CrossFit gym or an HIIT specializing gym? Are you interested in combat sports or yoga? If you just want to lose weight through cardio, see if the gym has weights, treadmill, elliptical, skipping ropes, punching bags etc. it also needs to have enough space for you to train properly. If it is congested, you’ll probably hate it later. Also, know that you would need to consider pre and post workout things like a locker room or lockers and a shower is also available.
The second most important thing that you need to consider is your own financial standing. If you cannot afford a steady gym fee or the huge membership fee, then that gym is not ‘perfect’ for you. Calculate how much you spend every day and see what you can subtract and save up. Every month you’ll be left with a good amount of money that you can spend on your gym essentials.
Where is it located
Thirdly, look for convenience. Going to the gym shouldn’t be a hassle for you. It should be somewhere between your work and home. So if you are going to the gym before work, you don’t get late and if you are going to the gym after work, it is not that far away from your home. If it is a walking distance, even better.
Quality must come above everything. If you are not getting quality, then you shouldn’t be spending that big of an amount on it. Before deciding, visit the gym to see if that meets your needs. It should be clean and airy. It shouldn’t be dirty and see if the cardio machine is fully functional or any of the equipment that you need is proper and in working condition. See if the showers and bathrooms are clean too.
Go online. Every good gym now has a Facebook page, a website, an Instagram account and a Fitness blog with customer reviews. You’ll know what kind of people have been there and most probably you’ll find the before and after photos too. Word of mouth and internet has a lot of information and see what you can find about it through these two tools as well. If all these things check out, that means that gym has properly qualified trainers. You need to make sure that after all your time and money, you are getting the treatment you deserve from people who work at the gym as trainers.
Eyes on the prize. See if your goal is getting fulfilled there. If not, then don’t pick that one. Pick the one that has all the things mentioned above. Look at the extra benefits you’ll be getting, like a discount on your favorite coffee shop, sauna, security and the environment. You should feel comfortable if you are walking and working out in a gym. Go through the membership form, look for clauses that might get heavy on your wallet after a while, check the cancellation terms etc. as well.
After you’ve gone through all these things, decide and then commit. You need to lose weight or get stronger or become more active, whatever your goal is, and you need to commit to it. That is how you’ll achieve your goals.
