Men’s Leather belts can look pretty ugly if not taken care of. They can look like they came out straight out from a ripping machine or something if it is not taken care of properly. And the fact that some of them can turn out to be pretty expensive, seeing them get damaged or ruined after only a year’s time is not very appreciable. Two major factors affect how long it is going to last:
Using harsh and rough cleaning products will damage the leather and reduce the leather belt’s age.
If stored in sunlight, the leather is going to dry out and if stored in humid areas, it will mildew. In order to make sure that your men’s leather belt is in perfect shape, make sure you have the following items:
- A soft bristled brush
- A saddle soap
- Leather conditioner
You can use these items to keep you’re the belt you bought looking sharp and wearable for a lot many years.
Increasing the belt’s life
The first step to cleaning your leather belt would be to remove any signs of dirt or spills from your belt. You can do this effectively by making use of a soft bristled toothbrush or a shoe brush. Make sure you are gentle in your movements. Harsh scrubbing will damage the leather, with time if not immediately. If the spillage on your belt is something other than water, the only proper thing to do is to dry up the area with a slightly damp cloth.
Use the saddle soap to clean your belt once every six months. Rub the soap from the top to the end of the belt to remove any dirt or stains and wipe the soap off with a dry cloth. You should do this more frequently if you are in the habit of wearing the same belt every single day. This should be once in 3 months’ time.
After cleaning, condition your belt using a leather conditioner. You should only take this step if the leather belt feels too stiff. In most cases, the saddle soap itself conditions the leather belt enough. You can apply the conditioner by first putting it on a soft cloth and then gently rubbing it on both sides of the belt until enough amount of it has been nicely absorbed.
Allow the belt to dry before you put it on again.
