From the coming academic year 2019-2020, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad will launch a full-fledged B. Tech program for students seeking admissions in Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, candidates will get admissions to the course on the basis of JEE Advanced score. The fact of the matter is that IIT Hyderabad has become the first Indian Educational Institution to offer a full-fledged B.Tech programme in Artificial Intelligence.
In addition, after US-based Carnegie Mellon University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), IIT-Hyderabad is also the third institute globally offering a degree in AI. For those who don’t know, the course will have an intake of around 20 students. The score of JEE Advanced will be the deciding factor in admission.
Talking about the course syllabus, it will include the study of algorithms from the computer science department, robotics from the mechanical engineering department, signal processing from the electrical engineering department, and mathematical foundations. In addition, the course will also focus on a multitude of aspects, including smart mobility, healthcare, agriculture, and a lot more.
Objectives Of The Course
The course helps students to get a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of theory and practice of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The course also helps learners to become leaders in the industry and meet the emerging demands of the nation in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
Things You Should Know About the Course
The basic aim is to create a complete ecosystem for artificial intelligence and academics and research at IIT-Hyderabad. The ethical impact of AI and its associated technologies on areas such as privacy, bias, and related issues will be a key role in the B.Tech. Programme.
Students who are already pursuing other degree programs such as B.Tech in mechanical engineering or chemical engineering can also pursue minor in AI along with the same.
UB Desai, the director, IIT Hyderabad, said, “The major objective of this course is to create a complete ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence Academics and Research at the institute (IIT Hyderabad), including engineering programs, including B.Tech, M.Tech, and different minor programs in AI.”
“AI solutions offer a great impact on several critical domains in the country such as weather prediction, healthcare, surveillance, crop and soil management, and security, and defense”, said Sumohana Channappayya, Dean (R&D), IIT-H.
In addition, she further a statement that “the demand for professionals trained in artificial intelligence far exceeds the current supply. The B.Tech programme in AI will likely to play a major role in addressing this current demand-supply scenario”.
The potential for AI to improve the quality of human lives is absolutely incredible indeed. There is no argument with the fact that this program will train students in the fundamentals of computer science, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning). It will also allow students to deploy AI-based solutions. However, students need to keep JEE Main Advanced score in mind before choosing the course, she further added.
Since 2015-16, IIT Hyderabad is already offering an M.Tech program in AI and ML, and an M.Tech in Data Science.
