The popular drink Gin is well known for its flavour and its taste. It is mainly consumed as after dinner drink. A number of ingredients are used for gin preparation. After the gin is prepared it is also made to age using various methods, the result of which gives us the wonderfully flavoured drink it is.
What is gin?
We all know that gin is one among the alcoholic drinks. However, did you know that they have a legal definition to it? The juniper berries are the main ingredient of the alcohol and what makes it to qualify as a gin. If these berries aren’t there, then the drink could only be called vodka.
Legal definition of gin
In the European Union, the laws define three specific types of gin.
- Gin is basically ethyl alcohol with natural or added flavours. The drink can have colours.
- Distilled gin, where it is distilled before or after adding flavours to it.
- London gin, where all the flavours must be added before the distillation and the flavours should strictly be natural.
In the US, the gin is less defined and it is supposed to be a distilled alcohol with less than 40% ABV.
The ingredients of gin
Apart from the must have ingredient of a gin to be labelled as a gin, the juniper berries, the other ingredients are often called under one name, the gin botanicals. Some of them are –
- Angelica Root
- Orris root
- Chinese cinnamon
- Black pepper
How is gin made?
The gin is made using several variations in the ingredients and also there are several methods of distillations to choose from like the vacuum distillation, vapour infusion or steeping. However, whichever method of distillation is chosen, it is a very important process in the preparation of a gin.
Then there is an optional step called the ageing of gin where it remains in wooden barrels for long periods of time, which may be skipped and not a necessity in gin preparation. However, this is the process that makes the gin taste very heavy and smells pungent.
Queenscliff Distillery is one of the best distillery houses of Australia situated in Victoria at the Port Phillip bay. They are popular for their core gins: dry, citrus and navy. They have their own brew house where they prepare their authentic spirits in an underground cellar and you get to taste them above the ground in the “Tastes of the Region” room.
