This is a person who inspects water vessels such as boats and ships. When a marine surveyor inspects a water vessel they do an evaluation to make sure that international and federal boating requirements have been met. If there is any type of boating accident occurs they are the ones that are often called by the law enforcement to act as their investigator. They are the ones that piece together the details of the accident. Frequently a marine surveyor will be employed by an insurance company to examine the extent of damage a water vessel has that was involved in a boating accident.
When there is a ship being manufactured they will be brought in to monitor the development process. On each vessel manufactured yearly surveys are often performed. Being marine consultants they have to have great written and oral communication skills. When doing the survey they will have to communicate with all of the individuals that are involved and then write a detailed report on the findings of the survey. Each survey is potentially unique so they must have enough boating experience and expertise to be able to adapt to each situation.
Other duties of a marine surveyor can include:
• If there is a large storm and it causes damages to a boating vessel or vessels are damaged they will have to detail the damage.
• A marine surveyor is also used to evaluate the vessel immediately before it is soled so they can help the buyers get top value on their new boat.
• Measuring vessels for the amount of weight they can sustain. To be able to do this the surveyor has to have good measuring and mathematics skills. This is a very critical skill because if the vessel carries too much cargo weight it can run into problems on the water but if the capacity is underestimated there would be a lot of wasted space, which could have been used to put cargo.
• Salvaging because if there has been significant damage done to a water vessel the surveyor is the one that will determine which parts can be saved and reused.
To be a marine surveyor they do not really have to have any training or experience but if they want to increase their employability and attract client they should become an accredited marine surveyor. To become an accredited marine surveyor they will have to have certification from a professional organization. One of those is the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). To get their accreditation they will have to pass an exam and meet their experience requirements. Before taking the exam they can get experience working as an apprentice with a working surveyor who has several years experience.
