Pool Cleaning Tips: How to Get Rid of Algae
There’s nothing quite as inviting as a clean pool, particularly now that the weather is warming up, and it’s understandable that you want you water to stay pristine over the summer months. Unfortunately, it’s all too common for domestic and commercial pool owners to discover that their once clear water has taken on a greenish tinge thanks to algae. Today, we’re looking at what you can do when algae strikes.
Why does my pool get algae?
If you get algae from time to time in your pool, you’re not alone. Even the most diligent pool owner can discover that algae is beginning to take over their once clear water. So why does it suddenly appear? Algae loves water and if you don’t have the correct water balance, the right level of sanitation in your pool and or your water isn’t moving around, it can form very quickly
Green algae is the most common form of algae and it can spread quickly if you let it, often settling under ladders, on steps or in corners where the water circulation isn’t the best. You can also less commonly find yellow and black algae appearing in your pool.
How do I get rid of algae?
Firstly, preventing algae is easier than having to treat it. Make sure you’re running your pump for the recommended time and check your filter regularly to prevent it getting clogged. You need to keep a close eye on the chemicals in your pool and keep them within the optimal range, either manually or with an automated chlorinator.
Even with these preventative measures, algae can still appear and there are three main methods you can choose to get rid of it:
- Pool shocking – This method basically involves using a high dose of chemicals sanitiser (typically chlorine) to kill any algae and your pool technician will be able to point you in the right direction. Just make sure you wear gloves and protective eyewear when you shock your pool and always shock at dusk or nighttime. Shocking is can be often recommended monthly during the summer months.
- Add algaecide – Depending upon the seriousness of the algae, there is also the option of adding a specific algaecide to the water to kill any nasties which have appeared. Remember, not all algaecides kill algae and are often used more as a preventative so speak to your pool technician about whether this option is right for you.
- Floc your pool – Floc (or flocculent) is a chemical that collects all the little particles in your pool, including that (now dead!) pesky algae, and makes them settle to the bottom. Then all there is to do is get out your pool vacuum and collect the debris from the floor of the pool. This method is a bit more work for you thanks to the need to vacuum but it works well especially for more serious cases of algae.
