Family visitors to Gibraltar will find it offers quite many kid-friendly places to visit. There are lots of family events and activities held all through the year, well suited for those who visit this Mediterranean paradise with their kids.
There are a few but good Gibraltar hotels for the family to stay in comfort. Those travelling with families or in groups can also keep an eye out for Gibraltar holiday deals, offered at certain times in the year. These offer a good opportunity to save on accommodation expenses.
Indoor play centres: While earlier Gibraltar did not many indoor soft play facilities for kids thankfully, things have changed with a number of such centres spread across town. So even if there is an occasional day when there is a downpour, you can head with the kids to any of the indoor play centres in town. One such venue is the King’s Bastion Leisure Centre with a cinema, family bowling area, an amusement arcade, ice-skating and a wonderful cafe and restaurant.
Visit the beaches: There are six beaches in Gibraltar with Catalan Bay, Eastern Beach and Sandy Bay on the Rock’s east side. West of the Rock near the airport is Western Beach, with Rosia Bay to the south side. It offers a wonderful natural harbour with a beach section. A little further in the area is Little Bay. In the bathing season, there are changing facilities, lifeguards and plenty of cafes. The only hassle is parking in the Sandy Bay area, which has limited spots. These are great spots to enjoy a day in the outdoors with the kids in tow.
Playground and open areas: There is a good choice of outdoor playground areas with facilities for families in Gibraltar. Two locations with some of the best family facilities are on Europort Avenue and at Europa Point. With amazing views from both areas, they have a good selection of facilities. Europa Point offers an outdoor area for refreshments. Parents can dine in the cafe while keeping an eye on the kids enjoying themselves in the play area. Europort Avenue’s playground comes with a kiosk selling a variety of refreshments. While the playground at Alameda Gardens is strikingly beautiful the area is lacking for want of better facilities. There are plenty of smaller playgrounds and open areas also found across Gibraltar.
Commonwealth Park: One of the most attractive spots to visit is Commonwealth Park along the Queensway area. A great place to visit at any time of the day, it is a popular picnic spot for locals and visitors in the area. In summer a popup outdoor cinema shows movies on several days of the week. Step out of the park and you can visit any of the three marinas in Gibraltar. These are Marina Bay, Queensway Quay and Ocean Village. There are plenty of cafes, shops and restaurants populating these areas and are wonderful places to take a stroll and enjoy the splendid scenery. Evenings are the best time to visit them.
