There are very few pool owners who haven’t experienced the welcoming sight of a green pool. The culprit behind this unappealing colour and slimy pool surface is algae and it happens to the best of us. So, what can you do to prevent it? Today, we’re looking at some of the steps you can take to keep algae infestations at bay.
Invest in a pool cover
Sunlight is one of main factors which encourages algae to grow so a pool cover can be a good way to prevent infestations. This is a particularly good idea if your pool is exposed to sun for most of the day.
Run your pool filter regularly
Remember to run your pool filter for at least eight hours each day. This will ensure that the water is turned over and allows dirt and debris to be filtered out. Remember, you need to run your filter even in the winter months.
Maintain the pH of your pool
Maintaining the pH of your pool at between 7.2 and 7.6 is one of the best ways you can avoid algae infestations. Simply bring your water in to your local pool shop or use an at-home test kit.
Keep on top of debris
Don’t let debris sit on the surface of your pool as this can help breed algae. Scoop your water regularly and also check the skimmer basket to remove the build-up of dirt and leaves.
Shock your pool if necessary
If your pool is particularly prone to algae infestation, it might be worth super chlorinating, or ‘shocking’, you pool as a preventative measure. It’s best to speak to your pool technician to check whether this is necessary.
Brush down the walls
Algae most commonly accumulated on the walls and steps of the pool so brushing regularly can prevent it from growing. Invest in a good quality, stiff bristled brush to carry out this job. Your pool vacuum can then be put to work to remove the loosened debris.
Speak to the experts
If you’re doing everything you can to prevent algae but it seems to keep occurring, speak to your local pool technician. They’ll be able to advise you on what steps you need to take and can also treat any current algae issues.
