The autonomous cars are the trending technology in the automobile industry. Many companies have been trying to build in-house autonomous vehicles, but Uber is the only company that has attained success in the building the self driving cars.
The ridesharing giant established a research center in Pittsburgh called the Advanced Technologies Center (ATC) that builds the autonomous cars. The company has staffed professors and students from the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh who are specialized in the field of robotics.
Self driving cars
The self driving cars are the vehicles that are capable of sensing the environment and navigate the vehicle without the help of the human guidance. To sense the surroundings, the vehicles have to be built with certain sensory devices like the camera, laser light, GPS tracking device, radar, computer vision and odometry. The self driving cars are designed with the control systems that analyze the details like the signage, navigation path and the obstacles on the road and the sensory details help the vehicle in distinguishing between the vehicles on the road and the lanes and other human on the road.
The autonomous cars offer a wide range of benefits, among them are certain potential advantages are the reduction in the parking lots, reduced consumption of fuel, decrease in the traffic collision and traffic flow, lesser need for the insurance and reduction in the crime rate.
Driver on wheel in autonomous cars
The car sharing company launched its first autonomous cars in Pittsburgh and the test ride was done by the Mayor of Pittsburgh and other city officials. The self driving cars were able to sense the surrounding environment and navigate the path without any collision. A monitor is placed near the steering wheel that shows the visual navigation path so that the riders can see how the vehicle navigates using the control and sensory information.
Pittsburgh was the first city to welcome the driverless cars on its roads and the officials stated that by encouraging the companies to experiment the advanced technology will the city an opportunity to develop and grow. In order to permit the self driving cars in the city, the department of transportation had to make some changes in the transportation rules and regulations as well as in the roads and lanes and provide specific parking space. The city was willing to do all the required changes in the regulation so that the ridesharing company can operate its new service in the city. Since the modification process takes time and it is the first time for the autonomous cars to operate in the real time, the cars are accompanied by two drivers. One of the drivers takes care of the wheels in case of emergency, while the other person takes care of the autonomous device to check whether the autonomous technology is working properly or not.
After the beta process, the company planned to launch the service in its home city in San Francisco. So when the company launched its service in the city, but the city officials and authorities were against the technology. Therefore, they did not permit the ridesharing company to operate the autonomous service. And if the company wished to operate in the city they had to undergo a test drive in the city and pay $150 to get the permit certificate. Later the company uploaded its autonomous cars to the Phoenix city in Arizona, where the service was welcomed by the state governor.
Stepping toward the new future
The ridesharing giant is working with many automakers in designing autonomous vehicles and has included another popular auto manufacturer in its list. The company announced its partnership with the leading automaker of Germany, Daimler in January 2017. The key aspect of the partnership is that the German automaker will provide an in-house autonomous vehicle that can be used under the ridesharing service.
Daimler AG is a multinational automotive company that has its headquarters in Baden- Wurttemberg in Germany. The company owns several trucks, buses and cars and other motorcycle brands including the Western Star, Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes- Benz, Thomas built Buses, BharatBenz, Freightliner, MV Agusta, Smart Automobile, Setra, Mitsubishi Fuso, and Beijing Automotive Group. According to the unit sales, the automobile company is the second largest truck manufacturer and thirteen largest car manufacture company. By the end of 2016 the company sold three million vehicles and is part of the Euro market index.
Partnering with the leading car manufacturer is an added advantage for the ridesharing giant, because the company has faced several issues in the recent times and the new partnership will provide a good market review for them.
The agreement between the auto manufacturer and the car sharing company is not exclusive because Uber has partnered with many different auto makers; similarly there are chances that the automobile company might design the autonomous cars for many different car sharing competitors in the taxi dispatch industry. This is because of the open platform, and now the only focus point of the company is that the autonomous vehicle designed by the German company will be part of the Uber network in the years to come.
Designing cars is hard
The ridesharing giant’s co-founder Travis Kalanick shared his views about the partnership as a crucial one, because it difficult for the ridesharing company to design a car with a complete autonomous features, so the agreement with a global company helps in building a world class service and the riders can experience something new in the future years.
Working with an automobile company is not new for the car sharing giant because it has worked with Volvo in designing an autonomous car with sport utility that ran in the streets of Pittsburgh- Volvo XC 90. Apart from this, the company has worked with Ford Fusion that is designed with all the autonomous capabilities like the cameras, sensors, radars and laser lights.
Working with the Uber also benefits with the German company as it reduces the issues caused due to threat in the sales of the self driving vehicles because of the rapid growth of the taxi dispatch industry and also the company can increase its supply of the autonomous cars to hail the large rider base.
Earlier the company has faced several regulation issues in the state of California, and has even stopped its self driving service by the end of last year because of the disagreement with the DMV agency of California. So, the company transported about fifty thousand autonomous cars to the state of Arizona. By entering into the self driving technology the German company plans to lead the autonomous cars and with the strength of both the companies the future of transportation is going to become digitalized.
Other companies working with the technology
Google was the first technology company that started working on the self driving cars, but stopped the operation due to certain issues. Now the company signed a deal with the Fiat Chrysler and reopened its self driving technology. Similarly, the ridesharing giant’s competitor, Lyft has worked together with a leading auto maker in the world- the General Motors. General Motors are also working on the autonomous technology and has signed a deal to offer its self driving vehicles to Lyft’s car sharing network.
