Back when I was finishing my Bachelor’s, I really thought that I will get all the shortlists that I deserve irrespective of how much effort I put on my resume. I applied to all the firms that I was interested in!
But alas, the inevitable happened – and I got shortlisted in just 1 out of the 8 dream firms that I had applied to! I managed to get that job – but phew, it was a close call!
Now moving a bit forward in time, I had to make my resume again in order to get a summer job during my MBA course. This time I had thought that I will put in maximum effort into writing my resume! And so I did – I consulted at least 100 people, both on campus and off campus. The final result was that I had 3 resumes in my hand – 1 for management consulting, 1 for sales and marketing, & 1 for general management! I applied to 8 dream firms again (I love the number 8 I guess!). This time around, I got shortlisted from 7 out of the 8 firms!
The main reason for this change was because I really worked hard on creating my resume! And 1 great logic that I followed was that I created separate resumes for separate job types. Now management consulting requires a completely different skill set as compared to finance and if you apply to both of these industries with the same resume, then you are killing your chances of getting that dream shortlist. Hence, always make different resumes for different job types that you are applying to.
