When introducing water to the puppies?
The timing of the water depends on the breed of the dog. Some puppies may require drinking earlier while others may take some time. If we talk about the general time when can puppies drink water then it is 3 to 4 weeks of the age. During this time, the puppies only rely on the mother’s milk. That’s why it is an ideal time when puppies naturally wean from her mother’s milk.
A vet can suggest better than how much water you can give to the puppy because not all puppies have the mother and drink the milk of their water after their birth. We have orphan puppies too and those who do not get used to their mother’s milk.
When you start giving water to your puppies, do not start with the big amount of water. You must have patience and take your time with this process. The water would be a totally new thing for the puppies and it may take time for them to use to its.
How to introduce water to puppies?
As compared to food, it is easy for humans to introduce water to the puppies. You have to take care about few things which are not difficult at all. So, if you knew that it is time to introduce water to the puppies, here is the list of things which you need to take care about:
- The water must be little warm (not very hot or cold). Even the room temperature water is fine but little warm is ideal
- Separate puppies from their mother for few hours. This makes them hungry and allows them to drink and eat their first food
- Start from the water dropper or puppies’ feeder. This will make it easy for them to drink water.
It may sound a lot when it’s come to giving water to the puppies but it does not. The first few times may be very slow for you. So, keep your level of patient high.
Why not sooner?
You cannot give water to your puppies before 3 to 4 weeks because their need for water and food can be fulfilled by the milk of the mother. Even if you have an orphan puppy, it must be relying on the milk replacement formula which already has the required amount of water in it. By giving water before time, the puppy’s body will not get the right amount of nutrition which will directly damage the digestive system of the puppy as it is still immature to digest even the water.
